Spanking

Danny and I agree that spanking is a form of discipline we will use (and have used) for our children. I know that spanking is controversial and I'm sure there are several people reading this that don't agree with it. I will let you know that spanking in our house is not the first form of discipline utilized, but is used when warnings, time out and the like don't work. Fortunately Ty responds to the other forms of discipline on a regular basis. Tonight, Ty was spanked on the leg and it left fingerprints. That was the first time one of my spankings left a mark and it made me contemplate what I had done and why...in fact, I am still trying to decide how I feel about it.

yeah..that's a toughy. I am really not for most kinds of corporal punishment, but then when it comes to my own kids some days it changes. B/c I am afraid I will go too far, we only pop on the hand and only 3 times--still easy to get kind of hard though. We use other things a lot--drop of hot sauce for sassy mouth, soap for bad words, and our personal fav when they were younger and smaller "down time"--it worked with the dogs and kids really well--The good news is, if you work the discipline hard in the early years--by the time they are about 5 all they need is the "look" and an occasional pinch of the sweet meat on the arm. Don't sweat the marks--you will have lots more to feel guilty about.

We "spank" too. Not a usual thing, but...it is a last resort tye thing when the timeouts, countdowns, evil eyes and shouting has not worked. I think Ian has been spanked 3 or 4 times, and Rylee a couple. I think it will remain in the playbbok for a few more years...

again- I'm childless - so what does my opinion count for, right?? but I was a kid once. I got spanked a few times - but rarely (can't say the same for my bro..) but I did get spanked with the dreaded wooden spoon. A few whacks with that once (for blantantly lying and refusing to admit to what my mom knew I was lying about - hey, at least I stick to my story...) and all I ever needed after that was the threat that the wooden spoon might make an appearance....

To add to zookeeper... we saw friends the other weekend who are the parents of 4 year old trips; mom kept threatening them with the "wooden spoon" but had a) never used it and b) didn't have one to wave around. Those things are like 5/$1 at the dollar store--they even come in a purse size!
